Engineers and Architects were invited to attend the CPG Hard Hat Tour at Loews Kansas City Hotel on May 8, 2019. The hotel, under construction at 1511 Baltimore, is a $325 M, 24-story, Post-Tensioned Concrete structure. Todd Brewood, Sean Wonderlich and Jeremy Stech attended the tour, learned about the processes and logistics of post-tensioned slabs and got some great views of the city. A special thanks to CPG, SEAKM and JE Dunn for the opportunity.

Jeffrey Needham, Needham DBS, sponsored by the Concrete Promotional Group (CPG), presented "Composite Tilt-Up Panels - The Future of Tilt-Up Walls" to the AIA Nooniversity held on October 10, 2018. The presentation explores the current state-of-the-art in composite tilt-up panel construction and explains developments in design methods for tilt-up composite panels. The difference between solid panel design and the two-wythe composite design will be illustrated and the limitations of the current composite design methods will be shown. The future of composite panels in tilt-up construction concludes the talk.
Thanks to Christy Martin, Executive Director for CPG, and the Kansas City AIA for the opportunity.
Jeff Needham will present "Composite Tilt-Up Panels - The Future of Tilt-Up Walls" to CPG & SEAKM members.. The meeting will begin at 4pm with an opportunity for networking followed by the presentation from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. CPG is providing drinks and appetizers to enjoy.
Presentation Summary:
The continued adoption of energy codes is pushing tilt-up designers to use more edge to edge insulated panels. Using the two wythes of these panels working together in composite action is a logical solution for engineers to provide a strong and very efficient insulated panel. The use of composite design has been limited due to thermal bow concerns, lack of good design methods, and limited connector types.

Needham DBS fully supports the Build with Strength campaign.
The Concrete Promotional Group (CPG) launched Build with Strength (BWS) in the Kansas City market on February 16, 2017 with the help of Michael Wymant, NRMCA, Senior Director Building Innovations. Build with Strength supports the use of concrete in Mid-Rise Construction projects and is focused on reminding developers and owners of the benefits of concrete in building construction. Multiple meetings were hosted and included a CPG members only kickoff, Nooniversity with Architects and Happy Hour with Engineers.
Karen Hand, P.E. gave a 2 Hour Presentation titled “Tips for Successful, Profitable and Safe Projects...From the Desk to the Field” at the Johnson County Contractors Licensing Seminar. The seminar was held at the Overland Park Convention Center on October 24, 2016. The seminars are held twice each year. Contractors are required to take coursework to maintain their contractor licenses in Johnson Country. The presentation was sponsored by CPG, Concrete Promotional Group.
Abstract: As a structural engineer I have noticed a concerning decline in quality of design and construction documents. The purpose of the presentation is to address areas of concern and bring those to light so that you can plan for more successful projects. Thinking big picture in addition to narrowing in on details can allow you to view projects differently.
