Shulthis Stadium
Independence, Kansas
Rumored to be the location of the first night game in organized baseball, the original grandstand structure (ca. 1918) needed to be replaced. In conjuction with Crossland Prefab, Needham DBS provided structural design and detailing for a unique precast structure, closely mimicking the original design.
Because the original structure was cast-in-place concrete, this presented unique challenges regarding connections and constructability. Erection sequencing was coordinated early in the project with the contractor. Connections between members were hidden to the greatest extent possible to maintain the appearance of a monolithic structure. BIM modeling in Revit was utilized to coordinate the complex geometries and communicate connection details to both the precaster and the field crews.
