C-17 Corrosion Control Hangar
Hickam AFB, Hawaii
The C-17 project is a single bay corrosion control hangar. The hangar bay has a clear area of 210 feet wide by over 200 feet deep. The hangar is 72 feet clear in height. The structure uses a special, concentrically braced frame, with bracing towers that recall the original, pre-WW II hangars at the air base. These towers house the air handling equipment needed for the painting operations.
The building uses a MegaDoorâ„¢ brand vertical lift, fabric door. The hangar is configured for two telescoping work platforms suspended from the roof structure. All offices and support functions are housed in shops arranged around the hangar.
The project was designed and delivered as part of a design-build award process for $30 million. This contract was awarded by AFSCE after original bids exceeded the budget by over 50 percent.
